What Can Your Child Learn?

Short Answer: So much more than regular tuition.

As mentioned in a previous blog-post, Aletheia Academy is focused on skill-based learning, rather than content-based learning. This is why the "Accelerate" program only consists of 6 sessions, and doesn't drag on for the whole year trying to force your child to absorb pure knowledge.

While the teaching is skills-based, your child will pick up such skills in the context of the law - there will be legal content covered, but this is minimal compared to the focus on skills development.

Aletheia Academy's "Accelerate" program is designed to be short and impactful so that all children who wish to pick up some basic legal skills will have the opportunity to do so.

The "Accelerate" program is split up into two sections - Section 1 focuses on contracts and negotiation, while Section 2 focuses on legal research, legal analysis and oral presentations.

As an example for Section 1, once your child finishes the first 3 weeks of the program, he or she should be able to confidently come up to you to discuss his or her assignment - a "Chores Agreement".

Depending on your parenting style, you can either choose to honour the agreement or just treat it as an exercise. The important learning point for your child is being able to go through that process with you.

For this particular take-home assignment, I encourage parents to make counter-proposals to your child so that they can engage in a negotiation exercise with you. Try not to use the "parent" card (i.e. I'm your parent so you just listen to me!), but rather try to engage in logical arguments with your child to really help him or her internalize the negotiation process.

So for example, let's say your child starts off with offering to clean his room once a week for S$5 extra in pocket money - try counter-proposing that you would need him or her to clean it three times a week as it gets too dirty if it's only cleaned once a week. Pick up a dust-ball or a dirty piece of clothing to prove it to your child.

Your child can then react in many ways. In one instance, he or she can try to compromise and offer to meet in the middle (i.e. just twice a week). More enterprising minds may see this as an opportunity to triple their rates (i.e. okay, 3 times a week for S$15).
